En Mai

<< En Mai >> is a duo created around a reflection on the form of a contemporary dance performance. Indeed, it is quite paradoxical to realize that a piece of << contemporary dance >>, a type of dance so free and innovative, can sometimes be equipped with codes that  formulate it in a way that leads to its easy reproduction.

Choreographed by Antonin Mélon and Jérôme Février in August 2023 during a 2 weeks residency in the youth center of Gosselies "Les Gais Lurons" ASBL.

This piece is still in work.

Intentions

IMG_2988-1.JPG

Through this piece, the audience sees directly the codified aspect of a "good contemporary dance piece".

However, the aim of the piece is not to be a satire, but to show how the different codes can be applied and adapted in every kind of piece.

The fourth wall

The performance balances between the aspect of a <<show>> and a rehearsal in the studio. In this way, the 4th wall is broken, inviting the audience to enter the performers' thoughts.

We've brought a lot of personal material into this piece: the aspect of training, of learning codes of the profession, of emancipating them through the quest for a new form of expression.

"Web" culture

In a more global level, we were also inspired by the internet culture where humor is represented my "memes" of the new generation, but also the new trend of fast consumption: the "scroll" culture.

Movement

The movement of the piece takes many forms: improvisation, dance partitions based in music, moving in unison and "mutual listening".

All these form an evolving show that offers spectators different ways of approaching movement.
